Minister Malenica at the conference „Crime and Criminal Justice: The Role of Restorative Justice in Europe“

The Conference of the Ministers of Justice on the topic of „Crime and Criminal Justice: The Role of Restorative Justice in Europe“ was organised by the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers in Venice on 13-14 December, as a follow-up to Committee of Ministers Recommendation CM/Rec (2018)8 on restorative justice in criminal matters.

The topic of the round table discussion was the current use of restorative justice by the different criminal law jurisdictions in Europe and the obstacles in making restorative justice accessible and available at every stage of the criminal proceedings. 
 
In this context, a “Venice Declaration on the role of restorative justice in criminal matters” was presented in order to promote the practice of restorative justice and further implement its application by the Council of Europe Member States, with an emphasis on the Committee of Ministers Recommendation CM/Rec (2018)8 on restorative justice in criminal matters.  

The aim of the Conference was to promote the progress of the debate on restorative justice in criminal matters, based on the analysis made by European and international sources and taking note of the best practical experiences in Member States. 
 
On the margins of the Conference, Minister Malenica met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Ms Marija Pejčinović Burić.

In addition, the Minister had a bilateral meeting with the Armenian Minister of Justice, Mr Karen Andreasyan. They discussed digitalisation of judicial processes and improvement of prison systems.
