Study visit on tackling cybercrime in the USA

A Croatian delegation headed by Justice and Public Administration Minister Ivan Malenica was on a study visit to the United States of America, dedicated to the fight against cybercrime. 

The study visit was organised in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb, International Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (ICHIP) Office for Central and Eastern Europe, with the aim of exchanging experience in the field of countering cybercrime. 

Apart from Minister Malenica, the delegation comprised State Attorney General Zlata Hrvoj Šipek, State Attorney at Virovitica Municipal State Attorney's Office Bruno Moslavac, Judicial Academy Director Kristina Bekavac, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration and the Ministry of the Interior. 

The delegation had meetings at the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S Attorney and Cybercrime Unit, Eastern District of Virginia U.S. Attorney's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Google and Meta. 

At a meeting at the DOJ Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS), experience in combating cybercrime was exchanged, and the delegation visited the Cybercrime Lab, where they learned about the method of analysis of the collected electronic evidence. 

In addition, the delegation met with Judge Paul Grimm, an expert in the field of cybercrime, who presented some concrete examples from case law, the legislative framework in the field of cybercrime, especially with regard to the use of cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence in criminal proceedings. 

Representatives of the U.S. Attorney and Cybercrime Unit, Eastern District of Virginia U.S. Attorney's Office presented the organisational structure of the Unit, statistical indicators on cybercrime cases and concrete cases in which modern technology was used to commit serious crimes that the prosecution had uncovered. 

The meeting with the representatives of the DOJ Public Integrity Section focused on electronic evidence in the disclosure of corruption offences. The delegation met with the representatives of Meta and Google to exchange experiences in the matter of gathering evidence for criminal prosecution..
