Ministerial conference on the prevention of radicalisation and violent extremism in penal institutions

Minister of Justice and Public Administration Ivan Malenica participated in the regional conference of justice ministers, entitled “Prevention of radicalisation and violent extremism in the penal institutions of Southeast Europe - challenges and vision for the future”, which took place on 21-22 October in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The conference was organised by the Ministry of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the focus of discussion was on the prevention and tackling of radicalisation and violent extremism in prisons as an ever greater challenge in the Western Balkans region, as well as the definition of a common vision for future action in this respect. 

Apart from Minister Malenica and Bosnian Minister of Justice Josip Grubeša as the host, the conference was attended by ministers and senior officials of the ministries of justice of Albania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Kosovo, Slovenia and Serbia. 

The participants of the ministerial conference adopted the Joint Conclusions on preventing, tackling and defining a common vision for future fight against radicalisation and violent extremism in the prisons of Southeast Europe, and were able to present and exchange their experiences about these challenges in a panel discussion, with a view to shaping a coordinated response to one of the major problems in the area of execution of criminal sanctions, and possibly seeking assistance and support from international donors.
