On 23 and 25 May 2023, the CEP together with the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic organised the Conference on Probation and Restorative Justice as Alternatives to Detention within the European Framework.

48 participants represented 19 different European countries at the CEP Conference in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The Conference focused on how to improve offender’s rehabilitation with respect to the strategic objectives of preventing crime, minimizing the risk of recidivism, providing solutions to crime-related conflicts, and ensuring victims are taken care of accordingly.

The conference was attended by two representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration, whose participation costs were covered under the project “Strengthening human rights protection and public safety by improving the capacities of the Croatian probation service”, funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.

The participants had the opportunity to attend presentations, a round table and workshops on various topics, one of which, on “Probation services as evolving organizations”, was delivered by Goran Brkić, Head of Probation Sector of the Croatian Ministry of Justice and Public Administration. They were also able to exchange experiences during breaks and at social events.

Due to the constant changes in criminal policies, technologies and treatment programmes, it is of utmost importance to exchange knowledge and information among experts in this field in order to better respond to the challenges ahead.
